The Trail follows an easy pedestrian route around the historic town centre, with an optional return along country footpaths.

The way marked route starts outside the Town Hall in the High Street. The newly completed bronze relief of the centre of Thornbury is located there too.

The map on the wall of the Britannia building, outside the Town Hall on the other side of Silver Street, shows the location of Key Sites with more detailed information boards. Additional historic sites bear a bronze plaque.

The route follows a way-marked figure-of-eight path in two sections, which can be followed on different occasions if preferred.

A trail guide at 30p or booklet at £1.00 can be purchased from the Museum or the Town Hall, although the Trail can be followed entirely from the waymarkers

The trail consists of three main elements:

A Trail Plan with direction signs and plaques

The Trail is defined on the ground by bronze plaques incorporating a Trail Logo. These are set in the pavement and show the direction to follow. Along country footpaths they are set into wooden posts.

Trail guides

A series of guide booklets and leaflets giving historical information on various aspects of the history and historic features of Thornbury is planned. The first two are available and more are in preparation.

Key Sites Features

Selected key sites are enhanced by landscape features, designed to illustrate specific aspects of the town's history. A  bronze relief map of Thornbury is the last feature to be installed and contains the Millennium time capsules, prepared by the schools of Thornbury in 2000.

We hope you enjoy the trail.
